I had the same issue. I think the USB port on the rc was damaged somehow, perhaps when I plugged in a cable with too much force, though I always tried to be careful. The charging port is very fragile. I sent mine in for repair.

Agreed - AP does not seem to receive commands without the remote control connected to the Spark. Video/telemetry data is coming through, but no command seem to be going out to the aircraft.
