There are numerous posts about this phenomenon. For example on the first page. How is 700 m range possible with 5.8 gHz in CE mode. The official specs states, that the maxiumim range with 5.8 gHz is around 300 m (CE).

I don't understand how the range can be signifacantly better with an iphone compared to android, when the signal is transmitted by the RC. It doesn't make any sense.

100 m in CE regions with 5.8 gHz is pretty normal sadly. Android devices can't even connect to RC when it's set to 2.4 gHz so either you are forced to connect with OTG or hack it to FCC mode.

I don't think it's related to cellular data. I had the same problem on multiple phones as well. You can switch back to google maps on android if you have root access, it's quite easy and solves the problem wonderfully. Let me know if you are interested and I'll go into the details.
