What added advantage is the usb cable from the controller to the phone?

What does the USB cable do from the controller to the phone? The drone seems to work without it. I am using the DJI Go 4 Android app.

Yep. No range extension in itself unfortunately, but it does give the option of 2.4 gHz, which is better in range than 5.8 gHz, which is the only option without the OTG cable. You also can change your phone to "Airplane Mode" when connected up using OTG, reducing interference.
