If you are planning to connect as DJI intended then no, you link via wifi, so no cable. Some are reporting a better quality connection if you use the OTG route, but this is not an 'official' connection method.

Hopefully you ordered the 'Fly More' pack as the standard Spark doesn't ship with a controller. Also as indicated above, if he has an older model iPod then it isn't going to work sadly.
