That's correct. With the phone Wi-Fi your range is limited to approx 20 meters. With a controller your range is a couple hundred meters.

With a dedicated DJI controller your range will be greatly extended.

Art, Welcome to the forum. I'm like you and flew my Spark regularly until the pandemic and then my flying has dropped off dramatically. I've charged everything every few months so I'm always ready to go, but need to get flying again. Sorry I'm not near Southern California. Good flying! Jerry

Welcome to Welcome to the Spark community. Don't know anything about the cube add on. When you first start flying the Spark there's a beginners mode that limits your altitude and distance. Once you get thru that I think you'll be able to use the full capabilities. Good luck!
