For a good observation, send it out in Sport mode to get out there quicker.
Then, gain altitude to 120m (400ft) for better line of transmission past your 1256m
If you are in FCC mode, you should get this with OTG and antenna reflector (in the YouTube description):

It is more than enough to return home so long as you are not flying against the wind on the return.

FCC mode or CE mode is the transmitting power of the Spark depending on where you live.
FCC USA and other areas, CE most European countries.
GPS location controls that setting and can only be changed if you visit a different region.
(unless you hack it like some do)
