Hi all, I've seen questions before about registering for Part 107 vs. Section 336. I mistakenly registered for 107 although I will only be flying recreationally. I inquired about transferring my registration as I have no intention of taking the qualifying exam. I was told that they cannot do that after the registration is complete.

However, the FAA indicated that it is perfectly fine to fly recreationally with Part 107 registration without taking the exam.

I'd keep the email on that one...

So if you register as commercial (107) you're good to fly as a hobbyist while studying for the exam?

If you register as a hobbyist now ($5), and then get 107 certification later, would you have to reregister as a 107 pilot ( another $5) ?

I've read that as a hobbyist, it's you and all your drones for $5 ?

As a commercial pilot, it's $5 per drone ?

You're right, if you register as a hobbyist under Section 336 then you're covered for multiple drones. If you have your first drone though (like me) and mistakenly register under Part 107, then you're ok for recreational flying, even without completing the exam. As a commercial pilot, it's the exam ($150 I believe) plus $5/drone.

I mistakenly did the exact same thing. After carefully reading the FAA site, a 107 bullet item states you must have an operators license to fly under 107. I cancelled my drone under the 107 and reregistered under 336.

Interesting. I can certainly believe that to be the case, which is why I inquired directly to FAA. I don’t suppose they refunded your 107 registration.

All of my drones are registered with Part 107. I did it mainly for my I2 which I lease out to a local Environmental Consulting firm.
