When I turn my spark on, the front LEDs turn red but when I'm flying the drone they are not on. I was under the impression that they should be on when I'm flying the drone or am I missing something?

Are you recording during the flight?
The front LED's will turn off when video is being recorded.
They will also momentarily turn off when taking a picture to prevent the glare (if any) from the LED's to compromise the picture.
They also provide a visual cue that a picture has been taken.

Thanks for the help. I'll check that out. It doesn't say anything about that in the manual, at least not that i saw.
