Spark remote controll can't pair

So my new to me Spark came with a remote but for the life of me I can't get it to pair to drone. I've tried following the video on here and read the instructions. It's like it has no wifi and pushing the pause and function buttons simultaneously does nothing? Also, I have a USB to micro USB cable for my Android and a USB to USB-C adapter. That should work to hardwire the remote contrll to my cell phone?

Are you also setting up the spark into pairing mode at the same time? Press and hold the back button until it beeps once.
