Don't the spark and Mavic use the same hardware? The same internal circuitry? What causes the larger amount of fly-aways with the spark? Is the Mavic just more forgiving for an inexperienced pilot? What gives?

The hardware is different. The pilots are different. The design is different

If you check MavicPilots Forum daily you may be surprised that even Mavic2 fly-aways are reported several times each week

At least 3 main factors contribute to higher frequency of losses with the Spark:
1. Spark loses GPS signal and switches to ATTI mode with greater frequency than Mavic
2. OcuSync of Mavic is a vastly more reliable connection than boosted wifi of Spark
3. Spark is a first drone for many pilots so as a group they tend to be less experienced than Mavic pilots.

Amazing to see how many newbie pilots lose their Spsrk within first few flights. That's not a coincidence -- that's inexperience. Each Christmas this is a hot topic with all the gifted drones. It has just quieted down again.

I am so thankful that the one and only near fly away I had there was a tree in the way. It hit the tree about 30 feet up and tumbled to the ground. The only injury was a clipped propeller. The Spark is pretty rugged. It was on my second flight. I feel it was caused by me not calibrating the compass.

The Spark lacks the same redundancy that the larger DJI drones feature, one single compass instead of two. That is why there are less instances of flyaways with Mavics. Another huge factor is wind. All these aircraft, no matter how robust, can only fight so much wind. Sudden and harsh gusts of wind can disrupt flight control systems and the pilot loses contro, drone gone or crashed. Larger Mavics are certainly better at fighting wind, but there are limits. The really expensive rigs are of course better still, they have bigger motors, etc. Bigger financial losses too!

However, all that said, human error is the primary factor....:rolleyes:
