This design has been around since 1924 and repeatedly abandoned for a littany of reasons

We may see a successful implementation one day but the Bell exhibit was just a promotional stunt. It has no reason to exist as long as modern helicopters exist (which is one reason nobody has them in production).

Bell got the media attention they were looking for by displaying a non-flying model (prototypes are generally defined by engineers as functional early designs). This was just a motorless prop of plywood and fiberglass.
