My first crash came in Sport mode. It was dusk and I lost sight of the AC even though it wasnt far away. Lost track of the orientation (didn't check the display map) and backed into a pine tree. Tough little bird--only damaged two props.

I think your loss of signal using the OTG cable was a coincidence; maybe some other interference was responsible. I can think of no reason why the OTG cable would affect the range between the RC and the drone; that connection uses its own proprietary WiFi signal.

Definitely pick up the gimbal cover. It protects the camera from being banged around or accidentally grabbed when you're changing batteries or transporting, etc.

This is one of the first videos I watched. It's very good info. I still recommend shutting off your mobile device wifi when flying with an RC.

Using the OTG cable to communicate between the RC and the iPhone does not limit the flying distance. Something I learned through the many useful YouTube Videos (one in particular) is that the WiFi signal the RC uses to communicate with the drone is a much stronger than the iPhone's WiFi signal.

This may not answer your question, but I recommend hard-wiring the RC to the iPhone with a lightning to microUSB cable (available online for about $8). I disable the WiFi on my iPhone completely when flying and it's eliminated a lot of headaches.
