Every time I check my Airmaps software to see if my local Airport has gotten LAANC yet all I get is " Automated authorization coming soon to or below 400ft. Does that mean its eventually coming to my area. When I contact them I can never get a straight answer.

The rollout for LAANC seems to follow a priority with larger, busier airports first as would be logical. If you're wanting to fly in a Class B, C, D or E5 Surface airspace, you will definitely need to file a request. LAANC may not be available as yet for your particular facility. If it's a non-towered airfield outside the aforementioned class airspaces, it should fall under Class G airspace and no authorization is needed provided you fly under the general rules (max altitude 400ft AGL, give way to manned aircraft, etc.). Note the site also says:

The list of facilities taking part in LAANC will change during testing, including the removal of airports that previously offered the LAANC capability.

If you want to fly in controlled airspace near airports not offering LAANC, you can use the manual process to apply for an authorization, or wait until LAANC is available.

Im just inside the 5 miles of a Class D. (Leesburg Florida) This waiting is killing me. Trying to do the right thing but they don't make it easy..

They sure don't. I think there's hope it will get better over time, but so much is, excuse the pun, up in the air right now regarding drones and NAS safety, all we can do it stay abreast of the regs, ask questions when we're not sure, and do the right thing to ensure safety for everyone's sake. I watched the Drone Advisory Committee discussion linked by member SkipperAdam in the sUAS Rules and Regulation board and there's cause for optimism. Good luck Johnvi!
