I've been happily flying my Spark for a few months and getting about 1.5km range with direct LOS but I was in the mountains last week flying uphill (to avoid built up areas) and found that even a few trees with very few leaves dropped the range dramatically, like down to 300 meters before RTH (2.4 or 5.8). Anyone else noticed that ? Thanks !

This is normal. You'll always get the best range when there are no obstacles between the Spark and the remote controller.

Right, but that's a huge drop in range, 1/5th+ for trees with no leaves. Just curious to know what others are experiencing.

Normal 2.4/5.8ghz RF propagation characteristics.
