The best combination of apps to find legal and interesting places to fly is AirMap + Google Earth. To check that conditions are suitable UAV Forecast is the gold standard.
It's going to to be a challenge with LaGuardia and JFK plus all those hospital helipads. You might have to check the rules at the largest public parks or beaches.

Don’t believe what you hear there are plenty of places to fly.
Search “NYC 5 Boroughs Drone Meetups” on facebook
They use a certain spot of flushing meadows park quite a lot.
