My Spark crashed in the desert

Last week I was in Namibia in the desert.
There was a nice rock formation , so I wanted to take a few pictures.
I was about 20 meters away from the rock formation. My Spark took off to about 2 meters and then drifted sideways at a high speed towards the rocks, without me giving any command. It crashed against a big boulder, ruining two props and distoting the gimbal.
Note that as well the sand as the rocks have a reddish / rust color in that desert.
Could it be that there is a lot of iron in the soil and rocks and to the extent that it can completely ruin the "normal" magnetic fields ?.
Any friends over there or elsewhere (Austarlia ?) that are familiar with such environment and experienced the same ?
