When I fly a drone, with a controler using my phone as a monitor, or without a controler using just the phone, ...... am I using “Data” with my phone company?

You might be using data if you're using features that require an Internet connection (e.g. downloading the maps in DJI GO). If you want to ensure no data is used, then enable airplane mode on your phone.

Thanks, that is kind of what I thought. We are suddenly using twice the amount of our allocated “Data”, and wife was blaming the drones, but I suspect it is something else.

I can log into my phone carrier's website (Verizon) and view my data usage. It shows me how much data is used by hour of the day. If you're using Verizon or a phone carrier that offers that feature, it should help you figure out where that extra data is being used.
