New to drones

i am a complete newbie to drones.I bought a cheap one from amazon and could not keep it hovering as it went all over the place and I have a small yard.
I decided I wanted something better and bought the spark, did all the updates and and took it to my back yard to just try to hover it......nothing happened it wouldn’t take off.I was too close to the airport.
I drove a couple miles down the road and got it to lift off and took a couple of pictures,it was much easier to maneuver than the cheapie as I kept it on beginners mode for now.
The cold weather hit with strong wins and has been this way for over a week so no playing with the drone that’s a big bummer.
During my waiting I bought the controller two extra batteries and a case.
The week of not being to fly let me learn from this site and you tube,
I guess it was a lesson in disguise because I learned so much and plan to keep it in beginners mode for awhile w

Welcome! There's nothing wrong with keeping it in beginners mode until you feel comfortable.

The way I read the rules in the FAA frequently asked questions is that a drone operator does not have to register their drone if they fly for hobby use and fly under the model aircraft rules. If you want to register it, you can, but it's not a requirment.

Initially it was a requirement then it got repealed, but I believe it was re-instated a few month ago. Either way its all ******** and there's no possibly way for it to be enforced.

You are probably right. I am doing searches on Google and I am coming up with conflicting information. Probably just better to register and give them the $5.

Yes, you definitely need to register with the FAA. It only costs $5 when registering on their website here.

What you mention is the advice I give all new pilots; Read everything you can, watch good youtube videos on the drone and drone flying.

Regarding the FAA - YOU are required to register with the FAA, you don't register the drone. And yes its back in affect... There are fines if you don't and caught... For me its a non-issue. I fly within the established guidelines of the FAA OR the AMA.
