OTG cables for Ipad mini 4 and Spark Remote

I realize there has been many questions and answers here on this subject, but after all the searching and reading, I'm still confused about the proper set up of a new Ipad mini 4 (just ordered) and my spark controller. I tried a brand new Asus tablet which led to a 1 second lag on the video feed and numerous crashes of the DJI go4 app. (Returned to Costco) I may never need the OTG connection, but just for the experience of trying both connections, could someone PLEASE explain the correct cable configuration between the RC and the Ipad mini 4 (Wifi and cellular) And for that matter, what is a 'lightning cable' and do these enter into the equation at all. The lighting plug is what plugs into your iPad, and your RC needs a Micro USB plug (Android type plug) when you have that cable which is called an OTG cable, you can connect your iPad to your RC and won't need to use the wifi from your iPad to connect to your RC
