I read somewhere online that it's recommended to have the RC controller on when using gesture controls so you can assume immediate control in an emergency. Does anyone do this?

Yes.
Have the remote handy.

A lanyard is nice to have. You can have confidence in letting it hang around your neck as you are messing around with the gestures.

I use this lanyard when I fly with my mini4 or the Droids.

I have done and would recommend. On one occasion the Spark wouldn't react at all to gesture and just hovered. Straight onto controller got me back flying quickly without wasting more battery life.
